Question #4
I would love to see more diversified Asian American experiences. I want to see more Asian folks dealing with acculturation or acknowledging their culture in the midst of navigating the American life. I'd love to see more non-East Asian representation and validate the experiences of non-lightskinned Asian folks. Similarly, I want to see more queer POC relationships that are as "normal" as all the heterosexual relationships.
For me, I have had the benefit of growing up in a community that was majority black and equally composed of migrant populations, low-middle class income households, etc., so a lot of the identities which I talked about were moreso just how I grew up rather than me having to always state these identities. So when it comes to narratives which I'd like to see in popular media, I would like to see narratives that explore the complexity of my various identities without them centering the dominant gaze, for example the white gaze, the male gaze, the American citizen gaze, etc. I think there are ways when we can explore these realities and their nuances without making it seem like these identities only find relevance in their not being part of the dominant culture.
More narratives of the queer community that doesn’t have to do with being outed / coming out, narrative about Filipinos that’s similar to how Black Panther was written, how are Catholics standing up for the oppressed in today’s social climate.
Low SES: social mobility in both directions and coming to terms with this (outside of parodies like Schitt’s Creek which was funny but still a caricature).
Queer: long term, stable relationships that are mostly boring to the outside observer; characters who live full lives and happen to be queer rather than that being a central focus MH dx: people navigating ordinary shit while figuring out their own accommodations to adapt to different environments to normalize that there are people doing this every single day Womxn with womxn. South Asians in relationships. Inter-abled relationships.
Realistic fat women living their lives and enjoying themselves through fulfilling relationships-both romantic and platonic.
I would personally really enjoy seeing more films playing in theaters that are spoken in Spanish with English subtitles. As far as narratives go, there aren't too many things I wished I saw more of since I typically consume most media online and can access different things pretty readily if I want to.
First, I wish popular media had narratives for my identities, since aromantic is almost completely unknown and asexuality is barely mentioned, but I would like the narratives of all my identities to be accurately portrayed. I wish we could normalize touch without it implying a romantic or sexual interest or relationship. The Western cultures are so touch-starved, and we equate touch as leading towards romance and sex unfortunately. I wish we had characters more interested in things not related to romance and sex. I wish we had stories without needless and / or gratuitous romance & sex scenes. I wish atheists were portrayed as kind, caring, loving people. I wish aromantics and asexuals were seen as loving and warm as allos. Also, would LOVE to see relationships between allos and aros / aces, as long as they were done accurately and kindly, instead of making it like the aro / ace was bad or wrong or cold for withholding sex, etc.
Bisexuality as a valid identity, independent from other identities. Queerness as a normal piece of the human experience, rather than a "twist" or attention grab.
I wish there were more realistic transgender representations. To show not all transitions look the same. That we all aren’t body builders or models.
I would like to see more Asians being portrayed in a good light. They can be the stars. They can vary in personalities.
I would like to see more narratives of homosexual men who have strong and positive relationships with immediate family and other men. I also would like to see homosexual men in different stages of their life, not just adolescence. I want to see people who are established in their sexual identity experiencing other challenges or periods in their lives, that don't revolve around sexuality. I think this is born from a desire to see others of my identity who are in the same period of life I am, taking on challenges other than identity or sexuality.
I wish people understood that having a sexual or romantic identity that isn't hetero is natural and isn't a choice. I also wish people understood that people can have multiple marginalized identities and still live human.
The best representation, as I have seen it done in popular media, happens when the identities a character holds are there and respected, but not exaggerated or even highlighted. People simply are themselves, and that's that. That's really all I want. I'd like a Jewish character who's smart and fiscally responsible and also confident and assertive.
Hospitable, kind. That there is a variety of political and social beliefs among Middle Eastern folks just as in other groups. Armenian Genocide has only 1 major film. Additionally, showing our activism, survival, and community resilience in generations now. Our country had a successful, nonviolent revolution this year and it was not shown in news or any media.
I really yearn for more representations in popular media that depict strong Asian women. First off, there is just a general lack of Asian women in popular media. Fortunately, I think popular media has come a long way from just depicting Asian women as the silent and meek type. I remember watching "Grey's Anatomy" and being particularly drawn to Sandra Oh's character for her intelligence, independence, and confidence. I wish there were more representations like hers. Even nowadays, most Asian women are shown in heterosexual relationships and frequently do not take a central role.

I wish all of my identities were better represented in media. The narratives have yet to be written, that's the challenge. In particular, I wish more multiracial folks were showcased. Interracial marriage and biracial and multiracial children are becoming more prevalent in the US, and I would love for kids today and in generations to come to see folks that are like them show up in our shows, books, and as public figures.
Recently there has been a lot of shows about the cartel. I hate this because it giving people the wrong idea that we are all criminal drug users. I am tired of these shows.
I wish there was more. I wish there were strong feminine women who were bisexual and happy. I wish there was ANYTHING. For survivors of sexual assault. I have NO IDEA how people deal with it. I have looked and there is nothing for me there and it hurts.
I want to see dating culture of the LGBT+ community not be so taboo and meaningful relationships to exist more frequently.
I would love to see more children of gay parents presented in popular media so my son can see himself on the screen. I also would like to see more multi-ethnic families. I am Caucasian, but my husband is biracial Asian-Caucasian, and our son is African American. We do stand out in northern Colorado, but also are not unique in the nation.
I wish I would see more bisexual people who have relationships with everyone, not just hook up with a medley of people. I also would love to see bisexual people know their identity without having to have sex to find out - not every bisexual person is sex-crazed. I would like to see Atheists represented as people who simply don't believe that a higher power exists instead of someone who is out for revenge and full of hatred.
